An Open Forum on

Backlash against Muslims and Community Responses after September 11th

Thursday, November 29, 2001

The forum was held on November 29, 2001 from 7 to 9 pm in Crystal Cove Auditorium (located in UCI's Gateway Student Center).

In light of a number of hate crimes directed at Arab Americans in the US and in southern California since the September 11th attacks and in light of recent legislation that broadens the power of law enforcement authorities in the war on terrorism, the GECHS Project hosted an open forum entitled “Muslim Backlash.”

The event, co-sponsored by UCI’s Afghan Student Association, brought together academic experts, local law enforcement officials, and prominent members of the Afghan Community for open discussion and debate on pressing issues including:

  • how to balance civil liberties with security needs

  • controversial plans by university administrators to closely track foreign students

  • growing concerns in the Arab American community about the conduct and consequences of the war on terrorism

  • the meaning of Afghan-American Citizenship

  • and what you can do to mitigate backlash

Open Forum Panelists:

Ms. Nina Anvarinejad Afghan Activist and Community spokesperson
Mr. Michael Berkow Irvine Chief of Police
Mr. Hakim Haidar Afghan Activist and UCI Student
Sgt. Jonathan Hall Los Angeles Police Department, Hazmat and Environmental Crimes
Dr. Lina Kreidie Professor of Political Science, UCI
Dr. Richard Matthew Professor of Urban and Regional Planning and Political Science
Mr. Prany Sananikone Director of Diversity Relations, UCI

This event was part of a series of conferences co-sponsored with the UCI Afghan Student Association that explored the causes and consequences of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
