CUSA Director, Dr. Richard Matthew, was featured in TEDxUCIrvine’s newsletter last week in the “Past Speaker Update” section. The UCI professor spoke at one of TEDxUCIrvine’s most notable events of 2013, Salon GO. The talk entitled “A Million Miles” delves into his latest research endeavors in Swaziland.
“Natural disasters, increasing due to climate change, are particularly destructive in societies that are also experiencing war or some other form of severe social stress. Conventional wisdom suggests that children growing up in conditions where everything seems to be breaking down can have a very hard time developing empathy and trust, or believing in the possibility of a better future…Our goals are to try to figure out how children living in conditions of extreme adversity view the world, assess their vulnerabilities and their resilience, and help design programs that might empower them.”
