CUSA’s Science Committee Member and Professor of Psychology & Social Behavior and Nursing Science at UC Irvine, Jodi Quas, received the 2013 American Psychological Foundation Visionary Grant. The team led by Quas receives the grant in order to advance understanding of how fundamental human characteristics operate in children and adolescents growing up in countries plagued by war and sociopolitical conflict.
Along with co-investigator, Richard Matthew, Dr. Quas aims to determine what empathy, emotional understanding, and altruism mean to individuals residing in highly volatile, war-torn environments, as well as to evaluate how violence exposure affects children’s empathy, altruistic tendencies, and aggressiveness. Then, they will use the data as the basis to integrate interventions designed to enhance emotional processes into broader peacebuilding efforts aimed at reducing war and violence across the globe.
