This past April, UC Irvine’s celebration of Earth Week and the 2013 Human Security Award included a special project on behalf of undergraduate CUSA members Tania Reza (eARTh Studio Assistant) and Jaimie Wan (Operations Intern). This collective art piece, entitled “Thumbs Up: A Commitment to Sustainability,” was created to gather sustainability pledges through a more visible sense of solidarity between environmentally aware individuals. One by one, approximately 900 green thumbprints from across the student body, local community, and beyond found their way onto the canvas, including the year’s Human Security recipient, Chris Jordan.
To honor this majestic combination of creativity, community, sustainability, and security, the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs would like to thank all those who made the project grow and prosper. Special thanks go out to Theta Psi, PowerSave Green Campus, Anteaters for Recycling & Conservation, the Center for Living Peace, TGIF, and the Samueli Foundation for their support, as well as our dedicated groups of event coordinators, volunteers, press, and faculty. Please see the video below for our full thanks and reflection on the initiative.
